The Definition

Rehabilitation is the practice of improving a person's quality of life through medical interventions designed to improve, maintain, or restore physical, cognitive, or mobile health. This type of specialized healthcare aims for maximum results for the patient to gain greater independence after any sort of illness, surgery, accident or injury.

Types of Rehabilitation

The art of rehabilitation can be given to patients in different forms, depending on the patient's specific needs. These types of rehabilitation include:

  • Physical therapy (strength, mobility, physical body function)
  • Occupational therapy (life skills, social and everyday living)
  • Speech therapy (language and pronunciation skills, communication skills)

Medical Professionals Involved in Rehabilitation

It takes a team of medical professionals to help patients properly rehabilitate from their specific situations. Since rehabilitation requires such attention and plays such a main role in healing, repair and recovery, it takes teamwork from doctors, nurses, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to assist patients in the most efficient way. Each of these medical professionals are armed with the necessary technology and equipment necessary to help the patient get back on the road to recovery quickly and efficiently. Also, all of these professionals work together to come up with a specific rehabilitation plan for the patient, and play different roles to make sure the plan is carried out in full.

In short, depending on the patient's needs, rehabilitation can many of these things below, but are not limited to:

  • Improving speech and communication skills
  • Improving cognitive function for stroke, head injury, or neurological patients
  • Strengthens bones, muscles, tendons, and joints
  • Helps patients after orthopedic surgery
  • Helps patients function in bodily movements after major spinal cord injuries
  • And the list can go on and on
